Event Details

The Standing Strong – Yarning Up Loud gathering is hosted by Nursing at Flinders University on Kaurna Land on the 25-26th July 2024.

The gathering is a collaborative annual event organised by the nursing schools of Flinders University, TAFE SA, The University of Adelaide, University of South Australia and CATSINaM. These events are an opportunity to celebrate strengths, address improvement areas, and foster future collaborations. The organising committee aim to contribute to real impacts on the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses, midwives, and students in health and education organisations.

Participants in the Standing Strong – Yarning Up Loud gatherings include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nurses, midwives, student nurses, and midwives, as well as Aboriginal maternal and infant care and cultural capability workers, and non-Indigenous allies who share a passion for supporting and collaborating with First Nations healthcare professionals. The goal is to celebrate First Nations voices, knowledge, truth, and culture. As participants we are excited to learn, share and grow.

The gathering is a fantastic opportunity to meet people from all around the state, both government and private sectors, and to work out how we can take practical steps towards reaching a goal that all of us share: getting more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be nurses, midwifes and educators.

There will be a range of speakers including Aboriginal Directors of Local Health Networks, government representatives, representatives from each of the Universities, TAFE SA, CATSINaM and others.  Aboriginal leaders in healthcare will share from their professional and personal journeys.

The gathering will have yarning and workshop sessions about the need to decolonise the curriculum, increase opportunities for learning on country and the need to better support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students both in their study and their clinical placements.

The two-day meeting contributes to build interprofessional and cross institutional relationships with staff from the other education providers and health care staff from a range of clinical areas. We are excited to continue collaboration and sharing of ideas to support the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and healthcare professionals.

So, save the date! We welcome you to join us for the Standing Strong – Yarning Up Loud gathering 25-26th July 2024.
