Event Details

Robyn Archer Oration

Following her recent tour “Robyn Archer: An Australian songbook” with stops in Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Sydney and Hobart, Robyn Archer AO returns to Adelaide in November 2023 where she will deliver the inaugural The Robyn Archer Oration.

Robyn, one of the Australia’s greatest cultural treasures, is a singer, writer, stage director, artistic director, and public advocate of the arts, nationally and globally.

2023 marks the 50th anniversary of both the Adelaide Festival Centre opening its doors and the first staged production of the Flinders University’s Drama Centre. This year also marks the opening of the new Flinders city campus building in December.

This colocation of past, present and future, the strengths of Flinders and Adelaide as beacons of the arts and the festivals that showcase them, unite in this event to signal the vibrancy of the arts as it looks to the next 50 years.

Robyn’s links are powerful. She played the lead in the first production which launched the Festival Centre’s Space Theatre in 1974. It was directed by Wal Cherry, founder and first head of the Drama Centre. The production changed Robyn’s career forever.

Hosting the inaugural oration in the shadow of the new city campus building, and from a view of the new horizon proposed for Flinders university’s creative arts practice and teaching, the Oration will bring not just a perspective from a career spanning more than sixty years, but also some considered gazing at the role the arts might play in influencing futures beyond just the arts.

The Robyn Archer Oration is a biennial lecture devoted to the creative arts brought to you by the Assemblage Centre for Creative Arts and the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at Flinders University.

Toward the end of the evening, Associate Professor Tully Barnett will lead question time with Robyn as they discuss what the arts sector needs from the tertiary sector in terms of education, research and practice.

Guests will have the opportunity to make contact with Robyn over refreshments at the conclusion of the event.
