Dr Carla Pascoe Leahy will be talking about her research on the powerful continuities as well as profound changes to the ways in which Australian women experience first-time motherhood. These changes and continuities have both internal, psychological features as well as external, social features. During the course of co-creating over fifty oral history interviews with a diverse cohort of Australian women who became mothers since the mid-twentieth century, Carla has grappled with how best to explain the complex, multifaceted nature of becoming a mother. Drawing upon history, psychoanalysis and sociology, Carla has developed an interpretative framework she terms ‘temporal psychosocial’. In this seminar she will explain this new approach in relation to one aspect of my research: the relationship of a mother to her child.
