Event Details

We invite anyone with an interest in Iris Murdoch’s writings, whether literary or philosophical, to a seminar to be held at Flinders University (Adelaide city campus) to be followed by a concert at Mead Hall, Flinders Street Baptist Church, on Friday 13 March 2020.

Murdoch was born in 1919 and dozens of centenary events and celebrations have been held for her in the northern hemisphere in 2019. To date, however, Australia hasn’t even managed one, and Craig Taylor and Gillian Dooley from Flinders University are keen to rectify that, and are planning to celebrate her in her 101st year.

On the evening of Friday 13 March, Gillian will present a concert selected from the songs Murdoch refers to in her novels, with associated readings, as part of the Adelaide Fringe, in conjunction with the JM Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice at Adelaide University.

And during that afternoon, Craig and Gillian will convene a seminar, Iris Murdoch 101. The seminar will be free and open to the public, and we welcome offers of presentations related to any aspect of her life, work or legacy.
Seminar times and program details to be confirmed.

Presenters: Gillian Dooley, Craig Taylor, Ryan Manhire et al (seminar); Gillian Dooley, Alistair Knight (concert)

Sponsors: JM Coetzee Centre for Creative Practice
