Natural Sciences Taster Day at Flinders
Immerse yourself in Nature with a Taster Day in Marine Biology, Animal Behaviour, Biodiversity and Conservation, Environmental Science, Palaeontology, Geospatial Information Systems/ Surveying
Flinders University is inviting Year 11 and Year 12 students to participate in exciting opportunity to explore Animal Behaviour, Biodiversity and Conservation, Environmental Science, Geospatial Information Systems (GIS)/Surveying, Marine Biology and Palaeontology! This opportunity will provide students with close-up opportunities and hands-on experiences in a range of natural science fields so that they can make the right decision regarding their future studies and career! They will hear from current students and academics to find out what it is like to study at Flinders University.
• Who: The event is designed for Year 11 and Year 12 students.
• When: Monday 14 April 2025
• Time: 9.30am-2:00 pm
• Where: Flinders University, Bedford Park Campus
Students will have the opportunity to explore some of the following fields on the day:
• Biodiversity and Conservation: Into the wild – a biodiversity adventure on campus: Step into the living laboratory of Flinders University’s grey box grassy woodland, a nationally threatened ecological community right on our doorstep. On this guided biodiversity adventure, you’ll explore the hidden world of native plants and animals, unravel the ethics of managing introduced species and degraded ecosystems, and discover how restoring ecosystems improves our health and wellbeing. We’ll talk about getting hands-on with conservation in action and see how you can shape the future of biodiversity — starting in our own backyard!
• GIS/Surveying: Have you ever measured the environment? You can participate in building a giant jigsaw of Adelaide imaged from space, be part of a 3D data capture, handle drones we use to find animals and other environmental objects, and learn about GIS and surveying degrees at Flinders.
• Palaeontology: Tour the Palaeontology lab – get behind the scenes to check out the latest and greatest discoveries of new and mysterious creatures made by Australia’s biggest team of fossil hunters.
• Marine Biology: This is your opportunity to get up and close with marine animals, exploring where marine biology can take you.
• Animal Behaviour: Take a tour of our Nature Education Research Facility and explore the fascinating world of animal behaviour.
• Environmental Science: What is environmental science? Explore our wave tank to understand to dynamics of the incredible coasts and oceans on our doorsteps.
