The Academic Preparation Program is series of five seminars giving students a head start on their courses by providing them with an understanding of the important academic skills required for their work. These cover critical thinking, assignment preparation, academic reading and writing, and the basic maths which underpins many papers. Repeat sessions of seminars are offered throughout the week. Choose as many as you like!

This session is a brief how-to on reading academic texts.

Material includes: The difference between academic texts and non-academic texts, How to select reading materials in university, Common reading issues, Reading strategies, Typical structures and types of academic texts, Critical reading, How to take notes effectively, What constitutes good academic sources, and How to integrate your reading notes with your essays/assignments.
