Engineering Taster Day at Flinders
Flinders University is inviting Year 11 and Year 12 students to participate in an exclusive and exciting Engineering & Design Event! This event will give students close-up opportunities and hands-on experiences in different areas of Engineering and Design so they can make the right decision regarding future studies and career. You will have the opportunity to speak and hear from current researchers and students about their experience studying at Flinders University.
- Who: The event is designed for Year 11 and Year 12 students
- When: Wednesday 1 October 2025
- Where: Flinders University, Tonsley Campus, Tonsley
Students will have the opportunity to explore some of the following fields on the day:
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering: Tour our renewable energy lab and participate in a hands-on workshop on renewable and sustainable energy systems. At Flinders, you can specialise in renewable energy as part of your Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree so that you can spark innovation and lead the charge for greener energy systems worldwide!
- Biomedical Engineering: Come on a behind-the-scenes tour of the incredible Biomedical Engineering laboratories at Tonsley! See where our world-class research is conducted every day. From rehabilitation and motion capture facilities to state-of-the-art brain signals laboratories – come see what makes Biomedical Engineering research tick at Tonsley!
- Civil Engineering: Break some concrete! Civil engineers build a sustainable future – buildings, roads and transport systems. This interactive session will expose you to sustainable construction materials. And you will get up and close with their strength, load capacity and sustainability.
- Environmental Engineering: Build a Green City! Learn about carbon emissions and build a green city with a sustainable energy source, food source, transportation, and living space. Make the right decisions, manage your budget, and minimise environmental impact.
- Mechanical Engineering: Hear about real-world applications of shape memory alloys and how NASA reinvented the wheel! You will experiment with and see how you can use a spring made out of a shape memory alloy as a “muscle” to lift a weight.
- Design and User Experience UX: Lighten Up! In this introduction to 3D Digital CAD Design, you will utilize Parametric Computer Aided Design CAD Modelling (Autodesk INVENTOR and FUSION 360), discuss the power of CAD and Design Engineering, and create the artifacts of our lives. There will be demonstrations of the CURA splicer program and Ulti Maker 2+ 3D Printer technology, used to create a home lighting structure.

This opportunity will provide students with close-up opportunities and hands-on experiences in AI, Cybersecurity, Game Development, Software Engineering and Data Science so that they can make the right decision regarding their future studies and career! They will hear from current students and academics to find out what it is like to study at Flinders University.
• Who: The event is designed for Year 11 and Year 12 students.
• When: Thursday 2 October 2025
• Time: 9:00am-3:00 pm
• Where: Flinders University @ Tonsley
Students will have the opportunity to explore some of the following fields on the day:
• AI: Popular board games such as Chess, Backgammon and Go have long been used as a way of comparing the intelligence of machines against that of humans. This introductory workshop will cover the applications of Artificial Intelligence for games, with an interactive demonstration of intelligent player behaviour. We will also explore the ways in which AI can be used to help design and test brand new games.
• Games: Game development skills are in demand across a number of domains beyond pure entertainment. Creating simulations, interactive experiences, or just applying game mechanics to diverse areas are all pathways to careers in broad industries, private and public. To start the journey, this workshop will expose you to modern game engines and create a 2D platformer. Explore the process of creating 2D animation and level design in this hands-on workshop.
• Cybersecurity: Cyber criminals are increasingly leveraging advanced tools as part of their cyberattacks, heightening the risk of a security incident or a data breach. Participants who attend this workshop will learn how to understand the anatomy of an attack, also known as a kill chain; understand the tools and techniques threat actors use to breach an organisation; and attack a fictitious organisation using these tools. This cyber workshop involves global Cyber industry player Fortinet and provides a compelling, hands-on learning experience about who threat actors are, what tools and methodologies they use, and in summary how to use the Security Fabric to break the kill chain. Participants will compete in teams against each other to see who can obtain the most posts.
• Software Engineering: If you are intrigued by problem-solving or fascinated by the potential of technology to address real-world challenges, this session will lay a solid foundation for your future in the dynamic field of Software Engineering. In this interactive session, Dr. Janjua will provide you with an overview of what Software Engineering entails and the various career pathways you can pursue. You will be introduced to the fundamental principles of software analysis and design for developing cutting-edge applications that drive the modern world. Dr. Janjua will conclude this session with a group activity on programming logic design using flowcharts.
• From Patterns to Predictions: Data Science and Maths – The world around us is filled with patterns, from the oceans and weather to outer space and even human behaviour. In this workshop, you will learn how mathematics and data science give you the tools needed to understand patterns and make predictions, along with careers in maths and data science.
